Effects of storm runoff on the spatial-temporal variation and stratified water quality in Biliuhe Reservoir, a drinking water reservoir.

Stormflow runoff is an important non-point source of pollution in drinking water reservoirs. Storm runoff is usually very turbid and contains a high concentration of organic matter, therefore affecting water quality when it enters reservoirs. In order to investigate the impact of storm runoff on spatial-temporal variation and stratification of water quality during this rainstorm event, the inflow process of the storm runoff was studied through a combination of field investigation and simulation using the Delft3D-Flow model. Water samples were collected from Biliuhe Reservoir at four different periods: before storm runoff, storm runoff flood peak period, 1week after storm runoff, and 5weeks after storm runoff. The results showed that the input of storm runoff resulted in a significant increase in the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in the reservoir water, especially in the reservoir entrance. The concentrations of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) gradually decreased after the flood peak period; however, the average concentrations of TN and TP in the entire reservoir remained higher than those before the storm runoff levels for an extended duration. The storm runoff will greatly contribute to the contamination of water quality in a reservoir, and the water quality cannot be quickly restored by self-purification in the short term. During the flood peak period, under the influence of density current, the electrical conductivity (EC) and turbidity increased significantly in the water depth of 10-15m, so that the reservoir water had obvious stratification between 10 and 15m. The form of pollutants in storm runoff was mostly in particle phosphorus. Total particulate phosphorus (TPP) concentration was 0.015 ± 0.011mg/L, accounting for 44.12% of total phosphorus (TP) concentration in storm runoff flood peak period. The process of a rainstorm caused runoff, which carried high levels of turbidity, particulate phosphorus, and organic matter. The storm runoff disrupts the stratification of the reservoir water. In terms of vertical distribution, the turbidity in the reservoir area increased to 73.75 NTU. Therefore, the occurrence of significant turbidity density flow in the reservoir is frequently accompanied by intense rainfall events. Gaining insights into the impact of storm runoff on the vertical distribution of reservoir turbidity can help managers in selecting an appropriate inlet height to mitigate high turbidity outflow.

Phosphorus supply and floodplain design govern phosphorus reduction capacity in remediated agricultural streams

Abstract. Agricultural headwater streams are important pathways for diffuse sediment and nutrient losses, requiring mitigation strategies beyond in-field measures to intercept the transport of pollutants to downstream freshwater resources. As such, floodplains can be constructed along existing agricultural streams and ditches to improve fluvial stability and promote deposition of sediments and particulate phosphorus. In this study, we evaluated 10 remediated agricultural streams in Sweden for their capacity to reduce sediment and particulate phosphorus export and investigated the interplay between fluvial processes and phosphorus dynamics. Remediated streams with different floodplain designs (either on one side or both sides of the channel, with different width and elevation) were paired with upstream trapezoidal channels as controls. We used sedimentation plates to determine seasonal patterns in sediment deposition on channel beds and floodplains and monthly water quality monitoring. This was combined with continuous flow discharge measurements to examine suspended sediment and particulate phosphorus dynamics and reduction along reaches. Remediated streams with floodplains on both sides of the channel reduced particulate phosphorus concentrations and loads (−54 µg L−1, −0.21 kg ha−1 yr−1) along reaches, whereas increases occurred along streams with one-sided floodplains (27 µg L−1, 0.09 kg ha−1 yr−1) and control streams (46.6 µg L−1). Sediment deposition in remediated streams was five times higher on channel beds than on floodplains and there was no evident lateral distribution of sediments from channel to floodplains. There was no effect from sediment deposition on particulate phosphorus reduction, suggesting that bank stabilization was the key determinant for phosphorus mitigation in remediated streams, which can be realized with two-sided but not one-sided floodplains. Further, the overall narrow floodplain widths likely restricted reach-scale sediment deposition and its impact on P reductions. To fully understand remediated streams' potential for reductions in both nitrogen and different phosphorus species and to avoid pollution swapping effects, there is a need to further investigate how floodplain design can be optimized to achieve a holistic solution towards improved stream water quality.

[Variation in Phosphorus Concentration and Flux at Zhutuo Section in the Yangtze River and Source Apportionment].

Phosphorus (P) is a pollutant of great concern in the Yangtze River Basin. The Xiangjiaba Reservoir and Xiluodu Reservoir on the lower reach of the Jinsha River began to operate in 2012 and 2013, respectively, which greatly changed the concentrations of suspended sediment and characteristics of P form and transport in the reservoirs and the downstream reach from Yibin to Jiangjin of the Yangtze River. The Zhutuo section is representative in the water quality of the Yibin-Jiangjin reach, which can not only reflect the comprehensive effects of the formation of the two reservoirs and changes in the aquatic environment in the Min-Tuo Rivers but also reflect the quality of water flowing into the Three Gorges Reservoir. The runoff, concentrations and fluxes of suspended sediments (SS), and P concentrations and fluxes at Zhutuo section were studied during 2002-2019, and the source of P was apportioned based on the principle of river base flow. The results showed that in the past 18 years, the concentrations and fluxes of total phosphorus (TP) and particulate phosphorus (PP) at Zhutuo section in the wet season were higher than those in the level and dry seasons; the rule of positive correlation between PP and SS concentrations remained unchanged. From 2002 to 2019, the concentrations and fluxes of TP, PP, and dissolved P (DP) generally increased first and then decreased, and the operation of the Xiangjiaba Reservoir was a time node for the trend turning. Compared with that in the period from 2002-2012, the SS concentration and flux decreased by 94% and 77%, TP and PP concentrations decreased by 46% and 70%, and TP and PP fluxes decreased by 58% and 74%, respectively, during 2014-2019. The decline mainly occurred in the wet season, followed by that in the level season. After the formation of the two reservoirs, the relationship between water and sediment and the form of P greatly changed, and the proportion of DP in TP increased significantly, whereas the proportion of PP was the opposite. The TP pool in overlying water in the dry and level seasons shifted from mainly particulate to mainly dissolved. The change in water and sediment conditions was the main driving force for the significant change in P concentration, flux, and form. Before the operation of the Xiangjiaba Reservoir, the Jinsha River was the maximum contributor to the whole and diffuse source part of the TP load at Zhutuo section among the contributing catchment sub-basins; however, the Minjiang River became the largest contributor after the operation. The average TP load at Zhutuo section from 2017-2019 was 3.575×104 t·a-1 (after deducting the natural background value), of which the contribution of diffuse sources and point sources accounted for 68% and 32%, respectively. The Minjiang River represented 49%, 43%, and 62% of the total TP load, diffuse source TP load, and point source TP load at Zhutuo section, respectively. Considering the load contribution and pollution intensity, the key area for P pollution control in the area upstream of the Three Gorges Reservoir was the Min-Tuo River Basin.

The seasonal and spatial distributions of particulate phosphorus (PP) in the water column of the coastal area and open sea of the middle Adriatic Sea area were investigated for the first time. The relationship between PP and two other important forms of phosphorus (dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), and organic phosphorus (P-ORG)), and the relationship between PP and other nutrients (nitrogen and silicon salts) and oceanographic parameters (temperature, salinity, oxygen saturation, chlorophyll a) from the water column were also examined. PP concentrations ranged from 0.007 μmol dm-3 in the open sea near Palagruža archipelago to 0.589 μmol dm-3 in the Krka River estuary. In the coastal area, PP concentrations were highest in autumn and lowest in winter. The vertical distribution of PP concentrations in the water column of the coastal area were highest in the surface layer during most of the year due to input of PP by freshwater inflows. In the open sea area, there were no significant seasonal or vertical differences in the distribution of PP concentrations in thewater column. Seasonal analysis of the total phosphorus pool (PP, DIP and P-ORG) in the water column indicated that PP and P-ORG concentrations were higher in the coastal area compared to the open sea, while DIP concentrations were comparable.The results further demonstrate that PP can be an important fraction of the total phosphorus pool. A significant positive correlation was found between PP and chlorophyll a, indicating that PP was mainly of biological origin, and with nutrient salts of nitrogen and silicon, while a negative correlation was found with salinity.

Long-term remote observations of particulate organic phosphorus concentration in eutrophic Lake Taihu based on a novel algorithm

Monitoring the long-term spatiotemporal variations in particulate organic phosphorus concentration (CPOP) is imperative for clarifying the phosphorus cycle and its biogeochemical behavior in waters. However, little attention has been devoted to this owing to a lack of suitable bio-optical algorithms that allow the application of remote sensing data. In this study, based on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, a novel absorption-based algorithm of CPOP was developed for eutrophic Lake Taihu, China. The algorithm yielded a promising performance with a mean absolute percentage error of 27.75% and root mean square error of 21.09 μg/L. The long-term MODIS-derived CPOP demonstrated an overall increasing pattern over the past 19 years (2003–2021) and a significant temporal heterogeneity in Lake Taihu, with higher value in summer (81.97 ± 3.81 μg/L) and autumn (82.07 ± 3.8 μg/L), and lower CPOP in spring (79.52 ± 3.81 μg/L) and winter (78.74 ± 3.8 μg/L). Spatially, relatively higher CPOP was observed in the Zhushan Bay (85.87 ± 7.5 μg/L), whereas the lower value was observed in the Xukou Bay (78.95 ± 3.48 μg/L). In addition, significant correlations (r > 0.6, P < 0.05) were observed between CPOP and air temperature, chlorophyll-a concentration and cyanobacterial blooms areas, demonstrating that CPOP was greatly influenced by air temperature and algal metabolism. This study provides the first record of the spatial-temporal characteristics of CPOP in Lake Taihu over the past 19 years, and the CPOP results and regulatory factors analyses could provide valuable insights for aquatic ecosystem conservation.

Long-term dynamics and drivers of particulate phosphorus concentration in eutrophic lake Chaohu, China

Particulate phosphorus (PP) plays an important biological role in the eutrophication process, and is thus an important water quality parameter for assessing climatic change and anthropogenic activity factors that affect aquatic ecosystems. Here, we used 20-year Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data to explore the patterns and trends of PP concentration (CPP) in eutrophic Lake Chaohu based on a new empirical model. The validation results indicated that the developed model performed satisfactorily in estimating CPP, with a mean absolute percentage error of 31.89% and root mean square error of 0.022 mg/L. Long-term MODIS observations (2000–2019) revealed that the CPP of Lake Chaohu has experienced an overall increasing trend and distinct spatiotemporal heterogeneity. The driving factor analysis revealed that the chemical fertilizer consumption, municipal wastewater, industrial sewage, precipitation, and air temperature were the five potential driving factors and collectively explained more than 81% of the long-term variation in CPP. This study provides the long-term datasets of CPP in inland waters and new insights for future water eutrophication control and restoration efforts.

A reconnaissance survey of channel bank particulate phosphorus concentrations, controls and estimated contributions to riverine loads across England.

Channel banks can contribute a significant proportion of fine-grained (<63 μm) sediment to rivers, thereby also contributing to riverine total particulate phosphorus loads. Improving water quality through better agricultural practices alone can be difficult since the contributions from non-agricultural sources, including channel banks, can generate a 'spatial mismatch' between the efficacy of best management applied on farms and the likelihood of meeting environmental objectives. Our study undertook a reconnaissance survey (n=76 sites each with 3 profiles sampled) to determine the total phosphorus (TP) concentrations of channel banks across England and to determine if TP content can be predicted using readily accessible secondary data. TP concentrations in adjacent field topsoils, local soil soil type/texture and geological parent material were examined as potential predictors of bank TP. Carbon and nitrogen content were also analysed to explore the impacts of organic matter content on measured TP concentrations. The results suggest that channel bank TP concentrations are primarily controlled by parent material rather than P additions to adjacent topsoils through fertilizer and organic matter inputs, but significant local variability in concentrations prevents the prediction of bank TP content using mapped soil type or geology. A median TP concentration of 873 mg kg-1 was calculated for the middle section of the sampled channel bank profiles, with a 25th percentile of 675 mg kg-1, and 75th percentile of 1159 mg kg-1. Using these concentrations and, in comparison with previously published estimates, the estimated number of inland WFD waterbodies in England for which channel bank erosion contributes >20% of the riverine total PP load increased from 15 to 25 (corresponding range of 17-35 using the 25th and 75th percentiles of measured TP concentrations). Collectively, these 25 waterbodies account for 0.2% of the total inland WFD waterbody area comprising England.

Remote Estimation of the Particulate Phosphorus Concentrations in Inland Water Bodies: A Case Study in Hongze Lake

Phosphorus is the most important nutrient associated with lake eutrophication and changes in cyanobacterial blooms, and particulate phosphorus (PP) is the main form of phosphorus found in highly turbid inland waters. Therefore, it is urgent to monitor PP concentrations in inland water bodies. In this study, we take Hongze Lake as the research area and establish a semianalytical model to estimate PP concentrations based on the total particle absorption coefficient (ap); the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) values, which indicate the model accuracy, were 14.90% and 0.009 mg/L, respectively. In addition, the construction process and parameter selection criteria of the remote sensing-based PP concentration estimation model were derived using remote sensing data obtained at different spectral resolutions. Sentinel 3 Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) and Landsat 9 Operational Land Imager version 2 (OLI-2) data were selected as representatives to verify the accuracy of the model; compared to these two datasets, the MAPE values of the models were 16.32% and 26.84%, respectively, while the RMSE values were 0.010 mg/L and 0.014 mg/L, respectively. Finally, the models were applied to Sentinel 3 OLCI and Landsat 9 OLI-2 images obtained on 16 January 2022. The results show that the spatiotemporal distributions of PP concentrations in Hongze Lake estimated from these two images were relatively consistent, but the OLI data reflected overestimations and underestimations in some areas. These research results provide a new methodology for estimating PP concentrations through remote sensing methods and help to further improve the accuracy of remotely sensed PP concentration estimations in inland water bodies.

Spatiotemporal variation of phosphorus in the Three Gorges Reservoir: impact of upstream cascade reservoirs.

The impoundment of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) and upstream cascade reservoirs (UCRs) has altered the hydrologic regime, with inevitable effects on phosphorus transport processes in the TGR. In order to investigate the effects of impoundment, long-term monitoring data of flow rate, suspended sediment (SS), and phosphorus fractions of six stations in the TGR basin were collected and divided into three periods, period 1 (P1) (1985-2002), period 2 (P2) (2003-2012), and period 3 (P3) (2013-2017), based on the periodic impoundment time. The results indicated that the impoundment of the TGR and UCRs considerably decreased the SS concentration. Efficient sediment interception by the UCRs led to a dramatic decline in the concentrations of total phosphorus (TP) and particulate phosphorus (PP) in the mainstream, while the total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) showed a general increasing trend from 2004 to 2017. Different phosphorus fractions in the mainstream exhibited seasonal variations; among them, the concentrations of TP and PP were highest in the wet season, while the highest TDP concentration occurred in the dry season. Further analysis indicated that the seasonal distribution of TP was significantly homogenized in P3. Additionally, the SS concentration was positively correlated with the concentrations of TP and PP in the mainstream, while the correlations in P3 were significantly lower than that in P2. The findings can provide a scientific reference for future investigations dedicated to the long-term effects of the UCRs on the eco-environment in the TGR as well as the downstream.

Modeling of rainfall induced phosphorus transport from soil to runoff with consideration of phosphorus-sediment interactions

Phosphorus (P) transport from soil to surface runoff is of great concern for the accurate prediction of P transport within the watershed, while the interaction between P and sediments has rarely been considered in conventional soil solute transport models. This study develops a novel P transport model that couples the processes of selective soil erosion and dynamic partitioning of P at the particle-water interface. The model assumes that the gradation of soil/sediment particles strongly affects the maximum amount of adsorption and therefore, affects P partitioning, while changes in the water environment also influence the partition coefficient. The novel model was then validated by four laboratory experimental runs. The R2 and RMSE values show that the simulated results are in good agreement with the measured data, indicating that the model is capable of effectively simulating rainfall induced P transport from soil to runoff. The modelled results indicate that an increase in the coarseness of sediment particles resulted in a sharp decrease in particle P adsorption (Csd) during erosion. Therefore, if the change in particle size was not accounted for in the model (Ked=Kp), the concentrations of soluble phosphorus (SP) and particulate phosphorus (PP) would be significantly underestimated. This highlights the importance of including selective erosion and P-sediment interactions in models of P transport from soils to surface runoff.

Monitoring the particulate phosphorus concentration of inland waters on the Yangtze Plain and understanding its relationship with driving factors based on OLCI data

Tracking the spatiotemporal dynamics of particulate phosphorus concentration (CPP) and understanding its regulating factors is essential to improve our understanding of its impact on inland water eutrophication. However, few studies have assessed this in eutrophic inland lakes, owing to a lack of suitable bio-optical algorithms allowing the use of remote sensing data. Herein, a novel semi-analytical algorithm of CPP was developed to estimate CPP in lakes on the Yangtze Plain, China. The independent validations of the proposed algorithm showed a satisfying performance with the mean absolute percentage error and root mean square error less than 27% and 27 μg/L, respectively. The Ocean and Land Color Instrument observations revealed a remarkable spatiotemporal heterogeneity of CPP in 23 lakes on the Yangtze Plain from 2016 to 2020, with the lowest value in December (62.91 ± 34.59 μg/L) and the highest CPP in August (114.9 ± 51.69 μg/L). Among the 23 examined lakes, the highest mean CPP was found in Lake Poyang (124.58 ± 44.71 μg/L), while the lowest value was found in Lake Qiandao (33.51 ± 4.71 μg/L). Additionally, 13 lakes demonstrated significant decreasing or increasing trends (P < 0.05) of annual mean CPP during the observation period. The driving factor analysis revealed that four natural factors (wind speed, air temperature, precipitation, and sunshine duration) and two anthropogenic factors (the normalized difference vegetation index and nighttime light) combined explained more than 91% of the variation in CPP, while the impacts of these factors on CPP showed considerable differences among lakes. This study offered a novel and scalable algorithm for the study of the spatiotemporal variation of CPP in inland waters and provided new insights into the regulating factors in water eutrophication.

Anthropogenic and Climate-Exacerbated Landscape Disturbances Converge to Alter Phosphorus Bioavailability in an Oligotrophic River

Cumulative effects of landscape disturbance in forested source water regions can alter the storage of fine sediment and associated phosphorus in riverbeds, shift nutrient dynamics and degrade water quality. Here, we examine longitudinal changes in major element chemistry and particulate phosphorus (PP) fractions of riverbed sediment in an oligotrophic river during environmentally sensitive low flow conditions. Study sites along 50 km of the Crowsnest River were located below tributary inflows from sub-watersheds and represent a gradient of increasing cumulative sediment pressures across a range of land disturbance types (harvesting, wildfire, and municipal wastewater discharges). Major elements (Si2O, Al2O3, Fe2O3, MnO, CaO, MgO, Na2O, K2O, Ti2O, V2O5, P2O5), loss on ignition (LOI), PP fractions (NH4CI-RP, BD-RP, NaOH-RP, HCI-RP and NaOH(85)-RP), and absolute particle size were evaluated for sediments collected in 2016 and 2017. While total PP concentrations were similar across all sites, bioavailable PP fractions (BD-RP, NaOH-RP) increased downstream with increased concentrations of Al2O3 and MnO and levels of landscape disturbance. This study highlights the longitudinal water quality impacts of increasing landscape disturbance on bioavailable PP in fine riverbed sediments and shows how the convergence of climate (wildfire) and anthropogenic (sewage effluent, harvesting, agriculture) drivers can produce legacy effects on nutrients.

[Effects of Land Use on Nutrient Concentrations in the Inflow River of Lake Taihu, China].

Land use is an important factor affecting non-point nutrient loading. Here, the Wuxi River basin was selected to analyze the influence of sub-basin land use on nutrient concentrations using remotely sensed land use data and monthly river water quality variables from October 2019 to September 2020. The results showed that the water quality of the river was closely related to land-use type. Specifically, dryland farmland, villages, and building land have a strong promoting influence on nitrogen, phosphorus, organic carbon, and phytoplankton chlorophyll a. The proportion of orchard land was also positively correlated with river nutrient concentrations. A negative correlation was observed between the proportion of forest land and nutrient concentrations. Moreover, the proportion of the water area in rivers and reservoirs was negatively correlated with the total dissolved nitrogen and nitrate concentrations in the river, and the proportion of the water area in natural pits and fishponds was negatively correlated with river nitrate and ammonia concentrations. Furthermore, the proportion of river and fishpond areas was positively correlated with the concentration of dissolved total phosphorus, dissolved organic carbon, and the permanganate index, while the proportion of the natural pond area was positively correlated with the concentration of particulate phosphorus and phytoplankton chlorophyll a. The influence of land-use types on water quality was also affected by distance from the river. This research indicates that the appropriate utilization of land and wetlands is key to controlling non-point nutrient loading in the river network, including Lake Taihu. Specifically, the self-purification capacity of wetland waters should be incorporated into nutrient control schemes, and special attention should be paid to the reduction of non-point source pollution in the drylands along the downstream riverbanks and urbanized areas.

Effects of Lanthanum Modified Bentonite and Polyaluminium Chloride on the Environmental Variables in the Water and Sediment Phosphorus Form in Lake Yanglan, China

The application of lanthanum modified bentonite (Phoslock®) and polyaluminium chloride (PAC) is popular in the restoration of European temperate lakes; however, the effects of the application on the concentrations of phosphorus (P) in both the water and the sediments have been poorly evaluated to date. We studied the effects of the application of Phoslock® + PAC on the concentrations of total phosphorus (TP), particulate phosphorus (PP), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), total suspended solids (TSS) and chlorophyll a (Chla) in the water, and different P forms in the sediments, in an isolated part of Lake Yanglan. The results showed that the concentrations of TP, PP, SRP, TSS and Chla decreased significantly after the addition of Phoslock® + PAC. Moreover, the concentrations of labile-P, reductant-soluble-P and organic-P in the sediments were also significantly decreased after the Phoslock® + PAC application. However, the concentrations of both the stable apatite-P and residual-P in the sediments after application of Phoslock® + PAC were much higher than the pre-addition values, while the concentrations of metal-oxide-P did not differ significantly between the pre- and post- application conditions. Our findings imply that the combined application of Phoslock® and PAC can be used in the restoration of subtropical shallow lakes, to reduce the concentrations of P in the water and suppress the release of P from the sediments.

Rice paddy irrigation seasonally impacts stream benthic macroinvertebrate diversity at the catchment level

AbstractAgriculture is one of the most critical anthropogenic disturbances to freshwater ecosystems globally. In monsoon Asia, rice paddies provide habitats for aquatic species, but how their associated irrigation systems can affect downstream ecosystems is poorly understood. Here, we used structural equation modeling (SEM) to estimate seasonal variations in benthic macroinvertebrate diversity and environments and quantified indirect effects of land use, especially of rice paddy areas, on benthic macroinvertebrate diversity through local environmental alteration. Our study site was the Yasu River tributary of Lake Biwa, Japan, and we performed our investigation during both irrigation and nonirrigation periods, representing different seasons. Seasonal variations in physical and chemical variables and diversity were observed. Seasonal particulate phosphorus concentrations to a large extent determined the abundance and community composition of benthic macroinvertebrates. SEM revealed that the proportions of forest, urban, and rice paddy areas in the catchment had significant indirect effects on biodiversity indices of local benthic macroinvertebrate communities. The proportion of forest area had robust negative effects on water temperature, but the overall indirect effects on the macroinvertebrate diversity contrasted between the two seasonal periods. The proportion of rice paddy area had a strongly negative indirect effect on the diversity through increased particulate phosphorous loading during the irrigation period, while the proportion of urban area had a significantly negative indirect effect during the nonirrigation period only. The seasonal negative impacts of rice paddy irrigation on benthic macroinvertebrate communities were possibly due to siltation arising from rice paddy soils. Our results have implications for environmental restoration and biodiversity conservation in catchment management.

Ice cover is a common channel phenomenon in some cold regions. But most of the researchers focused on the velocity distribution; the suspended sediment and phosphorus distribution in an ice-covered channel need more attention. Six different discharge treatments were carried out in this paper; and vertical velocity, suspended sediment, and phosphorus concentration were measured. The results showed, based on the convection-diffusion equation of sediment, the analytical solution of sediment vertical distribution given, and the coefficient of determination (R2) between the measured data and predicted data ranging from 0.9519 to 0.9777 and the root mean square error (RMSE) between the measured data and predicted data ranging from 0.2959 to 0.5892, that the analytical solution has a good simulation result. Particulate phosphorus concentration (Cp) is smaller in the top layer and larger in the bottom layer, and the dissolved phosphorus concentration (Cd) is larger in the middle and small in both sides; partition coefficient (Kd) is uniform in the channel which is assumed as a constant in previous studies. This result is helpful to know the retention law of suspended sediment and phosphorus in an ice-covered channel.

[Characteristics of Phosphorus Speciation and Genesis in Typical Tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir].

A comparative analysis of phosphate occurrence and its genesis during different dispatching periods of representative level I tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir was conducted. For this, water quality, hydrodynamic force, and environmental data were examined for backwater areas of the Xiangxi River and Shennong River during the low-water-level period (June), storage period (September) and high-water-level period (December) in 2018. The results suggest that the mass concentration of total phosphorus (TP) in the water body of the coves of Xiangxi River and Shennong River range from 0.049 mg·L-1 to 0.168 mg·L-1 and 0.059 mg·L-1 to 0.152 mg·L-1, respectively, surpassing the 0.02 mg·L-1 threshold for algal blooms. The mass concentration of TP, DP (orthophosphate), and PP (particulate phosphorus) in the coves of the tributaries were ranked as follows:storage period > high-water-level period > low-water-level period for TP; storage period > low-water-level period > high-water-level period for DP; low-water-level period > high-water-level period > storage period for PP. Based on Pearson's correlation coefficients, TP and DP were significantly correlated as well as temperature and pH, which are the key factors influencing the phosphorus in soils and sediments in the water-level-fluctuation zone. During the low-water-level and high-water-level periods of the Three Gorges Reservoir, the TP in the coves of the tributaries mainly exists as PP, accounting for more than 75% and 60%, respectively. The flow in the coves of the tributaries slows during storage periods, meaning that settlement of PP is enhanced, changing the dominance of TP to dissolved total phosphorus (DTP).

Effect of organic fertilizers on nitrogen and phosphorus runoff in purple soil farmland

Fertilizer nutrient loss by surface water contribute to eutrophication becoming one of the international problems. In order to study the effect of application of organic fertilizer on N/P loss in purple soil, an indoor simulating artificial rainfall experiment and in-situ natural rainfall experiment experiment was conducted in Chongqing, southwestern China. The result shows that TN(total nitrogen) loss in the simulation rainfall experiment was in the order of cow dung>compound fertilizer>chemical fertilizer>biogas slurry>oil cake>blank, whereas, TP(total phosphorus) loss was in the order of cow dung>chemical fertilizer>compound fertilizer>oil cake>biogas slurry>blank. TN content form organic fertilizer treated soil in the in-situ runoff test were lower than in chemical fertilizer treated soil at first, whereas the proportion of TN content form organic manure was increase and even higher than that form chemical fertilizer overtime. Grain nitrogen was the dominant nitric species in runoff under 15°, whereas Ammonium nitrogen was the dominant nitric species in runoff under 5°. The slope significant affect grain nitrogen content in runoff, while it has little effect on soluble nitrogen. Soluble phosphorus content in chemical fertilizer treatment was higher than that in organic fertilizers treatments, while particulate phosphorus concentration in chemical fertilizer treatment was lower than that in organic fertilizers treatments. Particulate phosphorus is the main form in runoff simulation, accounting for 50%∼90% of total phosphorus; while soluble phosphorus was the dominant phosphoric species with the slope, rainfall intensity and fertilizer dosage reduced. Rainfall intensity could increase P concentration in runoff. There was a significant positive correlation between the TN and TP concentration in runoff and rain intensity, fertilizer addition level, slope.

Extraction of bioavailable phosphorus in soils and sediments using an ultrasonic washing machine

For improving the management of watershed eutrophication, methods for measuring bioavailable phosphorus (BAP) are more important than measurements of total phosphorus (TP). BAP in particulate form (P-BAP) is an important substance that promotes eutrophication, especially during rainy seasons. Only a portion of particulate phosphorus (PP) is taken up by algae that contribute to eutrophication. Erosion and runoff associated with rainfall transport PP bound to sediments and soil particles to surface waters, thus increasing PP concentration. This research evaluated an extraction method using an ultrasonic washing machine for extraction time and frequency. Extraction at a frequency of 28-45 kHz and an extraction time of 1 min resulted in extracted P concentrations almost the same as concentrations extracted using conventional methods. This new method requires less time and is more efficient than conventional methods because it extracts P from multiple samples in a single step. Results indicate that extraction using an ultrasonic washing machine is a promising method for rapidly obtaining BAP from sediments and soil particles.
